Today, pets are being treated more like one of the family than ever before and a family pet is a great addition to a child's life. More than being a playmate and confidante, pets may also aid childhood development especially nurturing and social skills.
Research has shown that:
- Growing up with a dog (and other pets to a lesser extent), during infancy helps to strengthen the immune system and reduces the risk of allergies linked to asthma
- Young children, aged five to six in a family who own a dog are 50% less likely to be overweight or obese compared with those who do not own a dog
- Self esteem has been shown to be higher in children or adolescents who have a pet, and
- School aged child who own pets have been shown to be more popular with classmates, but also more empathatic
Animal Welfare League NSW believe in matching the right pet to the right family, to ensure that pets are part of a harmonious community and are the perfect addition to your family life.
