Today, pets are being treated more like one of the family than ever before and a family pet is a great addition to a child's life. More than being a playmate and confidante, pets may also aid childhood development especially nurturing and social skills.

Research has shown that:

• Growing up with a dog (and other pets to a lesser extent), during infancy helps to strengthen the immune system and reduces the risk of allergies linked to asthma
• Young children, aged five to six in a family who own a dog are 50% less likely to be overweight or obese compared with those who do not own a dog
• Self esteem has been shown to be higher in children or adolescents who have a pet, and
• School aged child who own pets have been shown to be more popular with classmates, but also more empathatic
