Animal Welfare League NSW is shocked at the Racing NSW’s use of advertising for upcoming event, The Everest, projected earlier this week over the sails of the Sydney Opera House.

Referred to as the ‘Biggest Billboard Sydney has to offer’ in a recent political statement, the use of Sydney Opera House has seen backlash this week from radio commentators, media personalities, politicians, as well as receiving an overwhelming response online

Over 1,000 demonstrators attended the protest on Tuesday evening, using spotlights and other tools to disrupt the projection promoting the upcoming horse race. The Racing NSW promotion appeared on the sails for over 30 minutes and was met with an uproar from protestors.

Disturbingly, the NSW Government has defended its decision to promote the event, despite the protest and a successful petition which saw over 311,000 signatures defend the iconic building.

The race, which sees a prize pool of $13 million, takes place this Saturday at Sydney’s Royal Randwick. Horrifically, the event lists itself as ‘the world’s richest race’ and is sponsored by the TAB.

AWL NSW CEO Mark Slater said that promoting events that risk animal welfare and encourage gambling is not something to be celebrated.  We have a huge problem with gambling already, and the use of advertising in this way, especially during Gambling Awareness Week is appalling”, he said.

“The Sydney Opera house is a National Landmark. It is recognised internationally and should be treated with respect. Not to be used to promote major gambling events or support political agendas. The fact that it has been used to promote horse racing, an industry that is already surrounded by controversy is disgusting.”

Mr Slater said that the use of animals for entertainment purposes is a cause AWL NSW is committed to stop. “Profiteering from animals, and jeopardising their welfare for our entertainment is a campaign we’re willing to fight, and horse racing is no exception.”
