Social Media Policy

Animal Welfare League NSW (AWL NSW) uses the following social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube. Our dedicated pages on each of these platforms are bound by our Social Media Policy which dictates what the appropriate uses are for each platform by us and the public (“other users”).

This policy is in place to ensure we meet our ethical obligations when conveying information in a public domain, and to ensure there is no misinterpretation of our standards of use and practices when it comes to communicating with “other users”.

AWL NSW welcomes and encourages friendly participation and discussion on our social media pages, however, should any communication from “other users” on our pages go against our standards set out in this policy, we reserve the right to remove posts and/or instigate a ban.

Our Obligations:

i. To not post anything which unfairly discriminates against a particular person or group based on age; gender, ethnic origin or religion.

ii. To reply to all fair comments^, even if they are negative, unless such comments use offensive language (including but not limited to obscene, racist, sexually explicit, discriminatory comments, or comments inciting hate); provide potentially dangerous, fraudulent or misleading information; are spam attacks; promote a third party business service/product or solicit business and/or personal information; violate laws or obligations including copyright, privacy or confidentiality; or are not relevant to our specific business practices. In such cases we reserve the right to delete offending comments and/or block users from accessing our page/s.

iii. To ensure our social media pages remain a safe environment for all users through moderating content which attacks or marginalises others. Please be patient when waiting for us to moderate as we have limited resources. If you require urgent moderation please contact our team via phone on 02 8899 3333 rather than sending a Facebook message.

iv. To not turn off comment capabilities so “other users” cannot voice their opinion. We believe your opinion is important and will give you the opportunity to voice it so long as it fits within the parameters of obligation vii.

Our Expectations of “other users”:

vi. To not personally attack any other user on our page/s. This also includes personal attacks on our staff.

vii. To not write comments^ on our page/s which use offensive language (including but not limited to obscene, racist, sexually explicit, discriminatory comments, or comments inciting hate); provide potentially dangerous, fraudulent or misleading information; are spam attacks; promote a third party business service/product or solicit business and/or personal information; violate laws or obligations including copyright, privacy or confidentiality; or are not relevant to our specific business practices. In such cases we reserve the right to delete offending comments and/or block users from accessing our page/s.

viii. To try and resolve any issues you have with AWL NSW by contacting us directly first either through our website; via phone, at our office, or by mail. While we are happy to respond to fair criticism on social media, we believe your issue may be more efficiently solved if you contact us first via these methods so we can do our utmost to resolve your issue or complaint.

ix. To not use social media to report urgent cases of animal cruelty. Such cases should be reported to our Inspectors directly either via our website form or by phoning us.

x. To not put a surrender request to us via our social media pages. The proper procedures for this can be found on our website or by phoning us directly.

^ “Comments” refer to any communication made by “other users” on AWL NSW’s social media pages. This includes tweets, messages and posts.
