Surrendering a pet

If you have a dog or cat that you can no longer care for, you can surrender your pet to us at either of our Shelters or at some of our Branches.

How it works - surrendering to our Shelters:

  • You must make an appointment before bringing your pet to our Shelters
  • Surrender appointments are available at Ingleside and Kemps Creek Shelter between 10 am and 3 pm Monday to Friday
  • We are unable to accept surrendered pets without a prior appointment, except in the case of an emergency
  • To make an appointment please call us on 8899 3333 between 10 am and 3 pm. Our staff will then discuss the details of the surrender process and advise you of next steps

What you will need to bring, once you have a confirmed appointment:

  • Once you have spoken with our shelter team and have been provided with a confirmed appointment, you will need to ensure you bring all necessary paperwork and information with you
  • All medical history and veterinary paperwork, including vaccination history and any medication requirements
  • Information about your pet's personality, behaviour and history, which will help us to provide them with the best care possible
  • Dogs must be on leashes and cats in secure carry cages
  • Payment for the surrender fee - our staff will advise you of the fee payable when you book your appointment

Animal Welfare League receives no government funding for our rehoming work and relies on the support of the community so we can care for and find new homes for surrendered pets. We appreciate any donations made when surrendering your pet, to help us provide them with food, shelter, veterinary treatment and loving care while we work to find them a new home. Donations above $2 are tax deductible.

We do our very best to rehome all animals surrendered to us, and our staff can provide more information about the surrender and rehoming process when you call to discuss an appointment.

To discuss surrenders or to make an appointment please contact our shelters on 8899 3333.
