Adopt a Black Cat this Halloween for $50
“We can’t believe that in 2019, black cats are still the least adopted in shelters. Why don’t people want to look like a witch? Why wouldn’t you want a gorgeous small panther in your house?”
Black animals – especially cats – are known to have lower adoption rates, and throughout history, black cats have been afflicted with superstitious beliefs and folklore. It’s sad to see that some people today still believe black cats are ‘unlucky’ and opt for other-coloured pets instead, potentially overlooking personality traits and those that are better suited to their lifestyle. Read more about black cat superstition here.
In modern times of Insta-pets and influencers, it is said that black pets are undesirable as they may not photograph as well as lighter-coloured pets or that their dark fur lacks the ability to make a connection with potential followers or adopters. For whatever reason, black cats are statistically less likely to be adopted than more brightly-coloured felines.
To help overcome the stigma, Animal Welfare League NSW is giving everyone the opportunity to bring a beautiful black cat into their home this Halloween with a reduced adoption price of $50 for all black, and black & white cats available to adopt from the AWL NSW Kemps Creek shelter. To shine a positive light on black cats often seen as ‘spooky’ this time of year, the promotion starts on Halloween and ends Sunday 3 November 2019.
All cats come desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, flea & worm treated, and health checked.

Did you know?
Cats make excellent companions and can be the purrfect option for busy people and families alike, and will take as much attention as you can give them. All of AWL NSW’s shelter cats and kittens are assessed by our expert behaviour team to ensure they can be well-matched with the right new owners. Some cats are friendlier than others, while some are more independent. Our team are on hand to guide and advise on what animal is best suited to your needs.
What else do I need to know?
Our standard adoption criteria and lifestyle screening applies to ensure it is a purrfect match! It can be costly to own a pet, so our expert staff will ensure that the decision to adopt a new family member has been thought through properly and the whole family agrees on the decision.
What will happen to these cats and kittens if they are not adopted?
AWL NSW does not place time limits on the animals in care, meaning our adoptable animals stay with us for as long as they need to before they are adopted.
Just not the right time to adopt?
