This month, we’re pleased to introduce Claire, one of the passionate Board Directors, helping shape a stronger future for Animal Welfare League NSW. From supporting her local Eurobodalla Branch to contributing at Board level, Claire brings a deep appreciation for the impact volunteers have on animals, communities and each other.
Here is what Claire had to share:
“I retired about five years ago and discovered that volunteering is one of the most rewarding parts of my life. It gives me the chance to make a difference, meet great people and stay connected to my community. I believe volunteering benefits everyone, the organisation, the community and the volunteer.
I joined Animal Welfare League NSW in 2025 and currently serve as a Director, Chair of the Animal Welfare Board Subcommittee and a member of two other committees. I’m also an active member of the Eurobodalla Branch, where I’ve enjoyed helping with public enquiries and fundraising activities. One moment that will stay with me for a long long time is when the Animal Care Truck came to Moruya. Wow. This was the most direct help I could ever imagine. I was so proud that day!

I really want to make volunteering the best experience for our members. People have different skills, interests and time to give, so I believe volunteering should be flexible and offer real choice. At the same time, volunteers should feel supported, valued and have opportunities to learn, grow and contribute in ways that suit them.
I would love to see every member feel there is a place for them at Animal Welfare League NSW, whether they can give a few hours now and then or take on a larger role. Every contribution matters, and together we create a stronger organisation for the animals in our care and the people who support them.
At home, life is shared with two rescue cats and two much-loved bordoodles, who remind me every day why the work of Animal Welfare League NSW is so important. They keep me smiling, grounded and inspired by the difference we can make for animals through the dedication of our volunteers and supporters.”
Claire’s story is a wonderful reminder that every volunteer brings something unique to AWL NSW. Whether it’s time, skills, experience or simply a passion for helping animals, each contribution plays an important role in creating a stronger, kinder community for the animals and people we support.
