Keeping pets happy and healthy starts with the everyday choices we make. We asked our veterinary team to share their top tips for supporting your pet’s wellbeing, from preventative care and nutrition to dental health and keeping their details up to date. Here’s what they had to say.
Keep vaccinations up to date
Regular vaccinations help protect your pet from serious and potentially fatal diseases. Speak with your veterinarian about a vaccination schedule tailored to your pet’s age, lifestyle and risk factors.
Stay on top of parasite prevention
Fleas, ticks, intestinal worms and heartworm are common in NSW. Year-round parasite prevention can help keep your pet healthy and reduce the risk of disease transmission to people and other animals.
Maintain a healthy weight
Obesity can lead to arthritis, diabetes, heart disease and a reduced quality of life. It can be tempting to spoil and treat pets, but their health must come first. Feed a balanced diet, moderate treats and ensure your pet gets regular exercise.
Don’t forget dental care
Dental disease is one of the most common health issues seen in pets. Regular dental checks, tooth brushing and appropriate dental products can help prevent pain, infection and tooth loss.
Microchipping and Registration
Ensure your pet is microchipped and that your contact details are always up to date with the relevant state registry (e.g. NSW Pet Registry). This significantly increases the chances of being reunited with your pet if they become lost and is a legal requirement for cats and dogs in NSW.
Desexing for long-term health and population control
Desexing is an important preventative health measure that helps reduce unwanted litters and supports animal welfare across NSW. It can also lower the risk of certain cancers and reproductive diseases that may help reduce some hormonally driven behaviours. Speak with your veterinarian about the most appropriate timing for your pet based on their breed, size and individual health needs.
