What is FIV?
FIV stands for feline immunodeficiency virus. FIV typically causes a weakening of the cat’s immune system. It is the same class of virus as HIV (a lentivirus); however, only cats can get FIV.

I own a cat that doesn’t have FIV. Can I adopt an FIV kitty?
Yes! Vaccinate your existing cat against FIV before you adopt an FIV cat to reduce the risk of infection. To make sure they get along with each other, keep them in separate rooms until you’re confident they won’t fight.
How should I care for my FIV furbaby?
FIV cats should be kept inside at all times, giving you the chance to build an extra loving bond with your special furbaby.
What about lifestyle considerations?
Like all precious things, FIV cats need extra TLC. They have a weakened immune system, so need a home where stressful changes are kept to a minimum. If you want a cat that’s ready to be pampered, an FIV cat could be the answer!
Will my FIV furbaby have shortened life?
FIV cats can live as long as a non FIV infected cat, and they can die from the same causes as any other cat. However they have a weakened immune system and illness can affect them more severely.
Can I catch FIV from my cat?
FIV only affects cats, so cannot be passed to humans. The FIV virus only lives a few seconds outside the cat’s body, so cannot be transmitted to other cats via food bowls or shared beds.
How is FIV passed on between kitties?
Risk of FIV transmission between the cats is low as long as there is no fighting between them. Bite wounds cause FIV transmission, so two cats that live together in harmony won’t pose a risk.
Does my FIV cat need special medication?
No. However if your cat looks unwell, please take it to a vet.
Does my FIV cat need a special diet?
No, but because the FIV cat has a reduced immune system, they need a nutritionally balanced diet, and yearly trips to the vet for checkups and vaccinations. These precious darlings require extra care…which makes them a little bit fancy!
