Many dogs get nervous or overstimulated when they see other dogs or unfamiliar people. The “Look at That!” game helps your dog stay calm and confident by teaching them that seeing something new or uncertain can lead to something great – like a tasty treat!

What’s the Goal?

To change how your dog feels when they see other dogs (or anything that makes them nervous) by turning it into a positive experience.

How It Works

Start at a distance where your dog can see the other dog but isn’t stressed.

When your dog glances at the other dog, immediately say “Yes!” and give a treat.

Keep doing this every time they look – glance, “Yes!”, treat.

Soon, your dog will look at other dogs just to get a treat, and feel good doing it. We are associating seeing another dog with a positive experience, rather than feeling stressed or anxious about another dogs presence.

Why It Works

This technique is called counter-conditioning. You’re helping your dog associate things that once made them unsure with something positive (treats!). Over time, they’ll feel less anxious and more relaxed.

Add a Cue

Once your dog understands the game, you can name it. Say “Look!” or “Look at that!” in a cheerful tone. This helps your dog know what to do and keeps things light and fun.

Pro Tips

If your dog isn’t responding, you may be too close to the other dog. Step back and try again.

If your dog tends to bark or react, say “Yes” and treat before they react.

You can also use this with anything your dog finds worrying, like new people, loud noises, or moving objects. Just start far enough away and go slow.

With consistency, your dog will start to look at you instead of reacting, and that’s a win for both of you!
