Veterinary Nurse

Animal Welfare League NSW is looking for a Full Time Veterinary nurses to join our growing team.

The Opportunity

The role will primarily be based at our Kemps Creek Veterinary Clinic supporting animals that have been rescued by our Inspectors & Animal Ambulance or surrendered to us by their owners. You can expect to see and respond to a full range of patient needs, primarily domestic cats and dogs.

You will also have the opportunity to travel to regional communities to work on our Mobile Vet Clinic to deliver subsidized de-sexing, vaccinations and microchipping services. During times of crisis, our Mobile Vet Clinic is also deployed to affected areas to support communities during natural disasters such as bushfires and flooding. Our MVC team offer a safe haven for displaced animals, assistance with pet products and food and veterinary care to impacted communities during times of need.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist veterinarians in various procedures, including surgeries, dental cleanings, and diagnostic tests
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by veterinarians
  • Monitor and record vital signs of animals, including heart rate, respiratory rate, and temperature
  • Provide post-operative care and monitor recovery of animals
  • Educate clients on proper animal care and nutrition
  • Maintain accurate medical records and update patient information in the computer system
  • Clean and maintain equipment and facilities to ensure a safe and sanitary environment
  • Willingness to undertake Vet Clinic reception duties and provide nursing advice in response to clinic enquiries

About You:

  • Cert IV qualifications in Veterinary Nursing
  • Minimum of 2 years of post-qualification experience working in a veterinary clinic or hospital
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Knowledge of animal behaviour, anatomy, and physiology
  • Proficient in computer skills and ability to learn new software program
  • Deep knowledge and compassion for animals
  • Familiarity with relevant legislation, including The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and the Companion Animals Act, is advantageous.

Inspector (Animal Welfare) - Metro

Summary:

As an Inspector, you’ll play a crucial role in safeguarding animals, ensuring their well-being through investigations, education, and enforcement of vital legislation like the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (1979). If you have a strong sense of justice and a heart for animals, this is your chance to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves. Step up and make an impact today!

Based in Sydney Metro, in this field-based role you will work within the inspectorate team, taking the lead on regional cruelty investigations and proactive enforcement covering the central coast and Northern Beaches region in New South Wales.

Responsibilities:

  • Investigates animal welfare and cruelty complaints that have been logged into the animal welfare software
  • Prosecutes non-compliant owners
  • Educates the community on looking after animals in their care
  • Removes animals in immediate or potential risk.
  • Provides appropriate assessment and interventions for emergency situations
  • Communicates effectively and clearly with internal and external stakeholders on all animals seized and related matters
  • Interprets and applies the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (1979) and provides accurate advice and information
  • Undertakes pro-active patrols and audits to detect offences in relation
  • Conducts comprehensive investigations, prepares reports and briefs of evidence
  • Attends court hearings and gives evidence when required
  • Educates all levels of the community in responsible and appropriate animal welfare and treatment
  • Educates and assists animal owners with animal welfare issues

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in the enforcement of legislation, and the collection and presentation of evidence in court including the ability to take factual legal statements
  • Experience in report writing
  • Experience in conflict resolution
  • Experience in animal care, husbandry and handling, including horses and livestock, is desirable
  • Background in either animal welfare or law enforcement, or equivalent
  • Cert IV in Government Investigations or equivalent (or willingness to work towards)
  • Drivers licence
  • Firearms License (or ability obtain)
  • Strong people and communication skills
  • Good time management skills and the ability to work well under pressure
  • Able to work confidently autonomously as well as an effective team member
  • A good working knowledge of the appropriate legislation including (but not limited to) Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, Companion Animals Act and Codes of Practice

This role is initially offered as a two-year fixed term contract, with the opportunity to be ongoing. Subject to continued funding.

About the different areas of service at Animal Welfare League NSW

Veterinary Services

The Animal Welfare League NSW veterinary team provides care to animals who may be surrendered to our shelter, branches or seized by our Inspectorate. Our veterinary team is responsible for ensuring the best welfare outcomes for the pets in our care, as well as providing routine treatment and surgery to help prepare our shelter pets for their new home. In addition to our standard clinic procedures, our veterinary team has a unique role in providing assistance with our Mobile Vet Truck which travels to regional areas, supporting our branch network to provide community services such as desexing, vaccination and microchipping drives. Our Mobile Vet Truck and veterinary team also act a ‘Rapid Response Unit’ providing urgent medical care to pets, livestock and wildlife affected by bushfires and other disasters.

Inspectorate

As one of only two licenced enforcement agencies in NSW, Animal Welfare League NSW can offer a challenging and rewarding career for those interested in animal welfare. Animal Welfare League NSW Inspectors are qualified and licenced to ensure we follow the laws that govern our operations. A Certificate IV in Government is desired to equip you with the knowledge to investigate matters under the law, and extensive knowledge is also required on the current Companion Animals Act and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Being an Animal Welfare Inspector is a tough job that requires resilience and the ability to understand the hardships of the role. Seeing animals in poor condition can be confronting and may not only affect your physical health, but your mental health too so a pragmatic approach is essential. A large part of the job is helping to alleviate animal cruelty and neglect by providing education  to pet owners, but sometimes a pet may need to be seized and an offender prosecuted.

Animal Welfare League NSW is interested in hearing from people who may already be qualified, or from those who are interested in starting an animal welfare career as an Inspector.

Shelter Services

The Animal Welfare League NSW shelter team is responsible for caring for hundreds of pets that rely on us each year. Our shelter team provides daily care, socialisation and training to help our pets find new forever homes. If you have a genuine interest in working with companion animals and have already obtained a Certificate ll in Animal Services (or are willing to obtain one), then you may be the next member of our shelter team. In our shelter, there are opportunities to advance your career into team leader or management roles, as well as moving into specialist roles which assist our foster care, volunteers and branch network.

Marketing and Fundraising

As a registered charity, Animal Welfare League NSW relies on community support and regular donations to be able to run our services and plan for future programs. We look after hundreds of animals every year through our shelters, branches, foster care network, and Inspectorate, and this work is supporting by our Marketing initiatives and promotions. Our Marketing and Fundraising team are also responsible for raising awareness of our vital work through our website, social media, and various events and activities.
