A Little Bit About Romeo

Meet Romeo. He is a shy boy who once he gets to know you just loves a back scratch and to be near you. He's just the most calm boy, especially considering how much pain he must have been in when he arrived. Our vets estimate his age to be somewhere around five years old. He is a very handsome blue tabby.

Romeo was transferred into our care as an FIV+ cat. He arrived with wounds on his face from cat fights requiring antibiotics. Unfortunately cats that roam at night and get attacked are at very high risk of contracting this disease which is quite common in the Shoalhaven.

So what does having FIV mean for Romeo. This simply means his immune system doesn't work as well as it should anymore. To make sure he lives to a ripe old age, just like any other cat, Romeo will need to be an inside only cat. FIV affects the body's ability to fight off disease and infections and so outside and roaming comes with too many health risks for an FIV cat.

As if all that wasn't enough poor Romeo also had the most dreadful teeth. He had already lost multiple teeth and X-rays showed many badly infected teeth. We have given him a full dental which required the removal of all but 4 of his remaining teeth. Unfortunately dental issues and FIV also go hand in hand. He has bounced back beautifully following his surgery and seems much happier with the infected teeth gone.

Romeo is terrified of dogs and so is not suitable for a home with them. He is very calm around other cats and likes to sniff noses and hang with the other young cats fostered with him.

FIV is transferred between cats through deep tissue wounds, not through close contact or food bowls. FIV cats can live quite happily with non FIV cats as long as everyone gets along. He may be suitable with another cat but this would need to be discussed further on application.
