What you need to know about adopting a dog.

All dogs available for adoption through Animal Welfare League NSW are behaviour assessed before being matched with prospective owners to help ensure we find the right home for each pet. Dogs are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, flea treated and wormed.

Adoption fees for dogs:

  • Dogs under 7 years – $350
  • Purebred dogs under 7 years (with papers) – $400
  • Dogs over 7 years – $200
  • Dogs over 11 years – $125
  • Puppies (under 6 months) – $500

Adoption fees for dogs through our regional branches are set by the local branch and listed on each animal’s profile.

Making the right match in 5 easy steps:

1. Getting started

Our Kemps Creek shelter is open 7 days a week from 10am until 3.30pm for adoptions. We recommend you bring the entire family, including any existing dogs in your care.

2. Talk to our expert staff

Our experienced shelter staff will guide you through the completion of our adoption questionnaire. We gather key information about your lifestyle, as Animal Welfare League NSW aims to match each individual or family with the right animal.

3. Getting to know the right dog

Once your questionnaire has been completed, our experienced shelter staff will discuss puppies or dogs suitable for your lifestyle. You will get to meet different dogs one on one in the company of a shelter staff member.

If you already have another dog, we encourage you to bring them to meet any potential new pet, just to make sure everyone gets along.

4. Take your time

Choosing a new companion should never be rushed, take your time to get to know each dog recommended by the shelter staff.

If the first dog you meet is not suitable, that’s OK! We usually have a large selection of breeds and personalities looking forward to meeting you.

5. The adoption

Once you’ve made your choice, our staff will assist you through the adoption process so you can take your new family member home.

Remember, at Animal Welfare League NSW, all adopted dogs have been behaviourally assessed and come with a 14-day health guarantee.
